DECISION GUIDE / Assets & tasks
When can a product revision reuse evidence from an earlier version?
An unchanged exterior does not prove that an updated product retains the performance demonstrated by an earlier test. Before carrying evidence into new advertising, compare the tested version with the current product, identify every change relevant to the claim, and request an applicability decision from the responsible testing owner. Hold unsupported claims until the evidence transfer is approved.
Separate visual continuity from evidence continuity
A revised product may look identical to its predecessor while using a different component, material, or supplier. The old product photograph may still resemble the current item, but an earlier performance report does not automatically apply.
Fictional exercise: a supplier change introduces a different seal into a container. The exterior remains unchanged. The earlier version has a fictional leak-resistance test record, but no applicability assessment exists for the new seal.
The decision is not which advertising assets need replacing. It is whether the specific performance evidence can support the revised product at all.
Map changes against the tested claim
Start with the exact claim, the version originally tested, and the current product's change record. Ask whether materials, components, manufacturing sources, or operating conditions differ in ways that could affect the measured property.
A change with no obvious visual effect may still require specialist review. Conversely, a visible change does not automatically invalidate every unrelated test. The testing owner must determine applicability from actual records.
| Change | Possible evidence concern | Required record | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seal supplier changed | Leak-resistance relevance | Old and new seal specifications | Hold claim |
| Exterior unchanged | Appearance does not establish performance | Current version identification | No automatic carryover |
| Operating condition changed | Original test scope may differ | Test conditions and new use specification | Review |
| Unrelated cosmetic detail | Effect on claim unknown | Documented change assessment | Owner decision |
Request a documented applicability decision
The editor should not decide that a new seal performs identically because it fits the same housing. Prepare a claim-specific evidence transfer request for the product and testing owners.
Possible outcomes are supported carryover, additional evaluation required, or evidence not applicable. Do not label any outcome approved until the responsible owner has provided a documented decision.

- Identify the exact claim and original test report.
- Record the tested SKU, revision, and operating conditions.
- Collect changes affecting the current product.
- Ask the qualified owner whether each change affects the claim.
- Record the applicability decision and supporting reference.
- Withhold the revised-product claim while material questions remain unresolved.
Release only claims with current-version support
For the fictional container, the prior leak-resistance record cannot be inherited merely from visual similarity. A new assessment or other suitable supporting evidence must be reviewed before advertising the revised version as having the same performance.
US FTC substantiation policy provides the background principle that advertising claims need support before publication. This editorial matrix is not a certified testing method.
Keep a manual record connecting the claim, old report, revised configuration, applicability reviewer, decision, and advertising version. Reopen the assessment after another relevant component or operating-condition change.

Frequently asked questions
Can an unchanged exterior justify reusing the earlier performance report?
No. Visual similarity does not establish evidence applicability. Review relevant internal changes and the original test scope.
Does every product revision require repeating every test?
Not automatically. The responsible testing owner should decide which evidence remains applicable and whether additional evaluation is necessary.
