Product images / DECISION GUIDE
How should you proof names and dates in personalized product images?
Treat personalized names, dates and monograms as exact order information, not as decorative wording an image generator may reinterpret. Use clearly labeled sample text for public marketing, a separate customer proof for the actual order, and approved production artwork for manufacturing. Itemlume can help explore presentation but does not synchronize orders or guarantee exact lettering.
Define which kind of personalized image you are creating
A public image of a necklace engraved with “Avery” can show the personalization style. It is not a proof for the customer who ordered “Avéry.” A private approval image for that customer has a different obligation: it must match their intended spelling, accent, case and placement. The file sent to an engraver has another obligation: it must meet that supplier’s actual production process.
Keep these three roles separate in filenames and your own review records. Do not silently move a marketing mockup into the manufacturing folder. Label sample personalization clearly in the storefront where appropriate, and use invented example names for public testing rather than a real customer’s personal information.
Capture the variable as an approved string
Record the exact customer-approved text outside the image request. Include punctuation, line breaks, character case, reading direction and the chosen style. A date such as 04/05 can be ambiguous without an agreed format; settle the intended date before making a visual. Do not let the generator choose which interpretation looks nicer.
| Variable | Approval question | Useful record |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Are every letter and accent correct? | Exact approved string |
| Date | Which date and display format? | Unambiguous date plus displayed wording |
| Monogram | Which order of initials? | Approved initial sequence |
| Placement | Which face and orientation? | Supplier-supported placement diagram |
The Shopify line-item documentation describes capturing custom name-and-value information. Capturing a field is not the same as proving that later artwork reproduces it accurately.
Use generation for presentation, not the final text authority
In Itemlume, provide a clear base-product photograph and describe the presentation you want. For a marketing scene, use an example engraving and review it. If an exact name cannot be preserved, generate a suitable scene and place the approved artwork in an external editor or use a real photographed sample. Do not publish letter-like marks merely because they resemble the requested name at a glance.
Shopify’s customization guide distinguishes storefront choices from fulfillment. Apply that separation to the image process: the creative scene and the supplier-ready text file are different deliverables. Itemlume does not connect your customer input fields to an engraver or print-on-demand partner.
Review the customer proof without approving unseen production
Send the customer the appropriate proof through your existing business process, with a readable view of the personalization and the stated approval scope. Ask them to confirm the exact text and intended placement. If the rendering uses approximate material appearance or scale, explain that limitation instead of allowing the mockup to imply a physical sample was produced.
The supplier should independently confirm font support, printable or engravable area and file requirements. A generated italic accent may look plausible yet be unavailable in the real typeface. Keep customer approval linked to the correct order and version in your external system; generating a newer scene must not overwrite the already approved spelling.
Run a small exception test before using the workflow repeatedly
Try invented examples containing a short name, a long name, an accent, repeated initials and an unambiguous date. Inspect the exact final files rather than just the workbench preview. The purpose is to find where your process needs manual artwork, a shorter supported layout or an additional customer question. It is not a benchmark of model accuracy.
If a proof changes after approval, stop production until the change is resolved through your normal process. Preserve the approved text separately from its visual representation so an image revision cannot become an unnoticed order revision. This boundary is especially useful for personalized products because one wrong character can make an otherwise attractive item incorrect for its buyer.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use one sample name for every marketing image?
Yes, if it is clearly an illustrative example and the layout does not imply that every customer receives that exact text.
Does a generated mockup count as a production file?
No. Obtain the artwork format and production approval required by the actual printing or engraving supplier.
Does Itemlume collect and send customer personalization orders?
No. Keep exact variables, customer approval and fulfillment in your external store and production workflow.
