DECISION GUIDE / Product images

How do I present a dimensioned engineering drawing in a product gallery?

A dimensioned drawing may help buyers understand a product, but resized gallery artwork should not imply that its geometry remains measurable on screen. Preserve approved dimensions, units, view names, and measurement anchors when adapting engineering views. If front and side drawings use different visual scales, disclose that clearly. Never derive real product dimensions from displayed pixels.

01 / DECISION GUIDE

Decide whether the gallery image is a drawing or a scale representation

An engineering view can contain authoritative dimensions while its presentation size changes. When a front view and side view are arranged in a marketing card, they may be resized independently to improve readability.

Fictional exercise: a seller places front and side drawings of a storage cabinet into one gallery card. The side drawing is enlarged to make its details visible. A decorative ruler beneath both images now appears to suggest a shared visual scale, although no such scale has been maintained.

This decision differs from explaining which number means length, width, or height. Here the editor must prevent buyers from interpreting independently resized drawings as a measurable photograph or common-scale technical sheet.

02 / DECISION GUIDE

Preserve the measurement anchors and view identities

Obtain the approved drawing or manual for the exact product revision. Keep each measurement attached to the physical endpoints it describes and retain the documented unit.

Distinguish front, side, and other views with explicit labels. Where the composite does not preserve a controlled common scale, use a clear 'Not to scale' statement rather than a decorative ruler.

Drawing applications distinguish model-space, paper-space, and projected dimensions. The approved product record remains authoritative.

Assemble the graphic without changing measurements

Prepare the final composition in an external layout tool. If either drawing is resized, check that dimension arrows still point to the intended features and that labels have not moved to unrelated edges.

Use vector or other accurate source artwork when available, but do not assume that a raster enlargement restores missing drawing precision. Avoid placing numerical dimensions on decorative objects or perspective cues that suggest another measurement basis.

  1. Identify the exact drawing revision and authoritative measurements.
  2. Label each original view before resizing.
  3. Record whether the final layout preserves a common scale.
  4. Remove misleading rulers and add an appropriate scale qualification.
  5. Check every measurement anchor, value, and unit against the source.
  6. Review the delivered gallery image at its actual display size.
04 / DECISION GUIDE

Test the buyer's interpretation after resizing

Ask a reviewer unfamiliar with the layout to identify the front, side, and meaning of each dimension. They should not need to estimate product size by measuring the image with a screen ruler.

For the fictional cabinet, the enlarged side view remains acceptable only as a clearly labelled illustration whose approved dimensions are preserved. It is not evidence that the two views share a visual scale.

Keep the source drawing, artwork revision, scale treatment, and final image together. When a responsive layout or social crop removes a view label, repeat the review before publishing that derivative.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Can the front and side drawings have different display sizes?

Yes, if their identities and approved dimensions remain clear and the layout does not imply a shared scale.

Can shoppers measure the drawing on their screens to check product size?

They should use the documented dimensions instead. Screen display and independently resized drawings are not calibrated measurement references.
