REFERENCE TROUBLESHOOTING / Packaging studio
How do I stop AI from turning corrugated packaging into solid board?
Provide a real cut-edge view alongside the assembled carton. The outer brown surface alone does not establish its internal construction. Review edge thickness, visible layers and folded areas without treating a generated flute pattern as proof of the packaging’s grade or strength.
Identify what the reference actually proves
A carton render may model every edge as solid smooth board or add a decorative honeycomb texture to imply protection. Both can misrepresent the selected material. Even a genuine edge photo should be linked to the actual approved sample, because similar outer liners can conceal different constructions. Keep visual material identification separate from any structural rating or supplier specification.
Prepare the evidence before generating
- Record the actual board specification with the producer and photograph a representative sample. Keep its identity tied to the packaging revision.
- Capture an edge that clearly shows the physical layers, plus an assembled view showing how edges and folds appear in use.
- Identify which cut edges are visible in the final concept and which are covered or folded away. Do not add exposed flutes merely to make the box look stronger.
- Generate a restrained packaging scene and compare the visible edge structure, not just the outer color or shape.
Example creative request and a review matrix
Illustrative request: Show this carton using the actual material references. Preserve the photographed edge thickness and visible layered construction where it is genuinely exposed. Keep folded and covered edges consistent with the assembled sample. Do not replace the board with solid plastic, add honeycomb cells or imply a tested strength rating from the image.
| Observed symptom | Evidence to inspect | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Every edge is a smooth solid slab | Compare the representative cut-edge view | Reject changed material depiction |
| Flutes appear where the edge is actually wrapped | Check the assembled sample | Remove invented exposure |
| A stronger-looking construction replaces the specified one | Compare sample identity and supplier record | Reject visual specification inflation |
Make the release decision
Use supplier documentation for material grade and appropriate tests for performance. The AI concept can illustrate a chosen construction but cannot verify its protective capability. If no representative physical edge exists, obtain one instead of asking the generator to invent a typical corrugated profile. Keep the approved sample photograph with the handoff so later artwork revisions do not silently change the material appearance.

Frequently asked questions
Can I identify the board grade from a generated edge?
No. A generated pattern is not material identification or a strength test. Use the actual sample and supplier specification.
