Product videos / SCENARIO GUIDE
How to test product video openings without rewriting the whole ad
Test a different opening emphasis while keeping the rest of the proposition stable. A product-first opening establishes the item; a detail-first opening raises a specific question. Both must remain truthful and compatible with the source image and the current one-shot workflow.
Define the opening question
For an insulated mug, an opening can show the whole product clearly or begin close enough to emphasize its actual lid. The second approach should lead to recognition, not hide the item for most of the clip. Do not begin with an invented spill or exaggerated thermal effect to imply a performance claim.
Write what the viewer should know after the opening. Use a concrete objective such as recognizing the kit or noticing the closure. Avoid vague targets like making it viral. Billo’s hook guidance is useful as a reminder that alternative openings can be planned separately from the full message.
Choose a testable distinction
| Opening | Purpose | Keep fixed |
|---|---|---|
| Product first | Fast identification of the sale item | Product variant and final message |
| Feature first | Attention on one verified visible detail | Feature claim and duration |
| Use context first | Explain a supported everyday situation | Audience and factual offer |
| Pack first | Reveal included contents clearly | Actual kit inventory |
A “problem first” scene may require a different source image or an edited sequence outside Itemlume. Do not force a scene transition into the current continuous shot if the plan cannot be achieved from its starting frame.
Create only eligible variants
- Draft the base direction in Product videos and approve the factual message.
- Change the opening emphasis and prepare a compatible image if necessary.
- Review each storyboard before generating the respective clips.
- Reject product errors, then compare the eligible versions at the same display size.
A generated variant may change details you intended to hold fixed. Record those differences instead of assuming a controlled experiment. If the changed version also has more dramatic light, another person and a different offer, simplify it before drawing conclusions about the opening.
Measure with the appropriate tools
For internal review, ask whether the viewer recognizes the item and understands the intended feature. For a live campaign, use the advertising platform’s defined metrics and a predetermined evaluation period. Consider audience allocation, traffic and offer changes when interpreting the result.
Itemlume does not run live ad tests or provide campaign hook-rate attribution. Keep the clip version, publication destination and measurement record together. An inconclusive result is useful information; it is a reason to refine the question rather than claim an opening has proven universal performance.

Frequently asked questions
Can Itemlume automatically optimize a hook from ad results?
No. It plans and creates clips; measure live performance in the advertising platform.
Does a feature-first opening always outperform product first?
No. Test the specific message and placement. There is no universal result established by this guide.
Should I change the offer while testing the opening?
Keep it fixed if you want to understand the opening’s contribution. Otherwise the comparison answers a different question.
