Assets & tasks / FIELD GUIDE
Why is a product image sharp until a shopper changes the color?
Check the selected rendition first. If the initial product image is sharp and only the variant image becomes soft, the store may be loading a smaller asset or an incorrect variant source. More AI resolution will not repair a storefront that requests the wrong image.
Reproduce one selection path
Start on a draft or public product page, note the default option and select one affected color. Record the displayed option label, asset identity and point where the blur appears. Repeat on a phone without changing browser zoom. A Shopify Community thread documents this exact symptom, but its suggested cause is not proof of the cause in your own theme.
Compare the selected variant’s original upload with the file actually displayed. If the original is also soft, return to creative review. If the original is clear, inspect the theme’s requested size and the image relationship for that variant. Keep the two investigations separate.
Build a symptom matrix
| Original variant | Selected rendition | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp | Soft | Requested dimensions or styling |
| Soft | Soft | Source export |
| Correct color | Different product | Variant association |
| Sharp desktop | Soft phone | Responsive rendition |
A developer should inspect the actual theme and responsive image configuration. Do not paste a code snippet written for another theme into production without checking its structure and testing a draft.
Download the variant image diagnosis CSV worksheet and fill it with your own authorized evidence in a spreadsheet editor. The included row is clearly fictional, not a measured result. Version, scope, reviewer and status fields support a manual handoff; Itemlume does not automatically inspect your store, verify facts or certify accessibility.
Keep evidence safe to share
Provide the public product URL, affected option name, expected asset and a cropped screenshot to the developer. Do not send an account password or customer data in a forum post. Record the theme version and whether the issue appeared after an update. This reduces guesswork without granting unnecessary access.
Verify the repaired selection
Test every affected swatch, return to the default and check zoom. Confirm that fixing sharpness did not break the product-to-variant association. Retain the actual approved variant photographs. Read swatch semantics and theme crop diagnosis for adjacent issues that require different evidence.
A developer handoff example
An illustrative report says: the slate variant is sharp in the uploaded file; selecting slate in the collection card loads a visibly softer rendition; the default sand variant remains sharp. Include the public page, the two option names and the theme version. Ask the developer to compare the requested dimensions and variant association. After the repair, test slate, sand and a return to slate on a phone. A clear result for the default option alone does not close the issue. This bounded report avoids blaming the image generator for an uninspected store behavior.
