SHOPIFY PRODUCT IMAGE WORKFLOW
Build a Shopify catalog that reads as one collection.
A coherent Shopify image set uses consistent framing while showing the real differences between products and variants. Create and review the assets in Itemlume, then upload them to Shopify and inspect your actual theme. Itemlume does not currently connect to your Shopify store or sync a product catalog.
Choose a catalog ratio before generating a collection
Use a shared ratio and an intentional margin around the product. A square collection can accommodate many product types, while a portrait layout may suit taller packaging or apparel. Choose based on the theme you actually use rather than a generic “best size” claim.
Shopify says product and collection images must be smaller than 20 MB and can be up to 5,000 × 5,000 pixels or 25 megapixels. It notes that consistent aspect ratios help side-by-side product images display at consistent sizes. These limits are upload boundaries, not a reason to export the largest possible file. Shopify product media specifications.
Assign each image a role in the product gallery
| Role | Recommended brief | Review question |
|---|---|---|
| Featured collection image | Complete product, consistent margin, simple background | Does it read alongside the neighboring products? |
| Variant image | Actual color and configuration from that variant’s source | Does the image match the selected variant? |
| Detail image | Visible material, closure, or feature from a real source | Has generation invented or simplified the detail? |
| Campaign scene | Truthful context, restrained props, clear product | Does the scene imply a feature or accessory that is not included? |
Do not create a new product color by merely tinting a reference. Use a photo of the actual variant and verify the result against it. A harmonious grid is not a reason to hide meaningful differences between products.
A practical export and upload sequence
- Pilot the direction.Test the most difficult source and approve the surface, light, framing, and product fidelity.
- Build the batch.Use the shared style settings, then inspect each variant and select the acceptable results.
- Name and describe the asset.Use a clear filename tied to the product and view. Write alt text describing what the image actually shows, without a list of unrelated keywords.
- Inspect the store.Upload in Shopify, choose the featured image, check variant links, and preview the real collection and product pages on mobile.
Shopify identifies the first media item as the featured or main item and uses it in several storefront locations. Reordering a gallery can therefore affect more than the product detail page. Shopify media management.
Keep SEO, creative quality, and sales measurement separate
A descriptive image and relevant alt text help people understand the product. They do not guarantee a search position. Likewise, a consistent image set does not prove a conversion lift. Evaluate a change against a defined period and metric in the store's analytics, accounting for changes in price, traffic, and promotion.
Itemlume can retain the generated options and your selected variants. Keep the final SKU-to-file mapping and storefront performance record in your own merchandising workflow. This makes it easier to revisit a rejected image or update a product without losing the original source.

Frequently asked questions
Does Itemlume connect directly to Shopify?
No. The current workflow is to create, review, download, and then upload through Shopify. Product syncing and automatic publication are not included.
Which image ratio should I use for Shopify?
Choose a ratio that works with your theme and product types, then keep it consistent for comparable featured images. Preview the actual store before publishing.
Can I generate a missing color variant from another product photo?
A generated recoloring can be inaccurate. Use a reference of the actual variant and confirm the color, material, and configuration.
Will these images improve my Shopify SEO or sales?
