Assets & tasks / SCENARIO GUIDE
How to name product images and write useful alt text
Name the actual product and view, then write alt text that describes what the image contributes in its page context. Neither filenames nor alt text can turn an inaccurate image into a good asset. Complete product review before adding discovery metadata.
Name the file for the asset you approved
A practical filename can contain the product family, actual variant and view, such as harbor-mug-blue-lid-detail.webp. Use stable separators and avoid names like final-final-newest. Keep internal customer details, email addresses and provider tokens out of filenames that may become public URLs.
Distinguish the original generation from a destination-specific crop. Add a simple view or crop label to your own file record rather than overwriting the only full version. Itemlume’s asset library stores generated work; final publishing filenames and storefront metadata are managed in your destination workflow.
Write alt text for the page context
| Image role | Useful description | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Identification | The visible item and actual variant | A list of unrelated shopping keywords |
| Detail | The feature shown, such as the closed lid | Claims that the picture cannot establish |
| Context | Product and meaningful use setting | Describing every decorative background object |
| Repeated decorative image | Context-appropriate accessibility treatment | Repeating the same verbose text everywhere |
Google Search Central explains that descriptive filenames and contextual alt text help its image understanding. Apply that guidance naturally; it does not prescribe keyword lists or guarantee rankings for a chosen phrase.
Prepare metadata after creative approval
- Select an eligible completed image from My assets and download it.
- Confirm product variant, image role and intended destination.
- Write a descriptive filename and concise context-aware alt text in your publishing notes.
- Upload the approved file and set the relevant metadata in the storefront or content system.
If the platform generates its own image URL, keep your mapping in the campaign record. Do not assume that a local filename becomes the public filename unchanged. Check the actual page rather than judging the final metadata solely from the download dialog.
Review the published image and description together
Read the alt text while looking at the final crop. Does it name a visible feature that has been cropped out? Does a claim say a bottle contains a substance when the scene only shows the container? Update the description when the image or its page role changes.
For complex specifications, keep important information available as normal page text as well as in the image. Alt text should not become an enormous hidden product sheet. Distinguish accessibility, product accuracy and search discovery in your review; useful metadata supports the asset, but cannot promise traffic or sales.
