Image remix / DEEP-DIVE GUIDE
How to adapt a square reference ad into a vertical composition
Recompose a square advertisement for a vertical canvas instead of stretching the original design. Decide which relationships must survive—product prominence, message order and recognizable brand cues—and which positions can change. Then review the new composition in the destination’s own preview.
Measure the change in relationships
A square ad may place a short jar beside a headline. A tall canvas adds height but makes that side-by-side relationship relatively narrower. Keeping both elements in their old proportions can create tiny copy and a small product surrounded by empty space. Scaling the jar until it fills the height can create the opposite problem: no room for the message.
Sketch three plain zones on paper: the opening message, the product and the supporting action. These are planning zones, not fixed percentage rules. Their size should follow the actual object and amount of approved copy. A tall dispenser and a wide box do not need the same allocation.
Choose between rearranging and simplifying
| Reference relationship | Vertical adaptation | What stays fixed |
|---|---|---|
| Product beside headline | Headline above, product below | Message order and exact product |
| Two supporting facts at the sides | One supporting fact near the product | The selected verified fact |
| Wide decorative environment | A narrower contextual background | Product identity and believable scale |
| Dense bottom offer strip | A concise separate action area | Approved offer conditions |
If the reference depends on a panoramic scene or a long row of products, a different reference may be the better starting point. The objective is a coherent portrait ad, not proof that every square layout can be retained.
Set the target ratio before generating the remix
In Image remix, choose the destination ratio before creating the candidate. State which relationships matter and give permission to reposition the copy or simplify the environment. Style guidance is often appropriate when the new geometry requires a substantial rearrangement. Upload the replacement product so its actual width, height and packaging remain the object evidence.
Photoroom’s resize documentation distinguishes changing image dimensions as an editing operation. Here, the creative decision is broader: a new canvas can require a new hierarchy. Itemlume does not provide an automatic placement-safe overlay for every advertising platform.
Avoid treating background extension as permission to invent more items. New space can remain quiet. If a product edge was cut off in the reference, use your complete product photograph rather than asking the system to guess the missing construction.
Inspect the destination, not just the canvas
Open the portrait output at an ordinary viewing size. The product should still be identifiable and the message should remain readable. Compare the proportions of the sale item with its original photograph; a wide carton must not become narrow merely to fit the layout. Check that shadows and the supporting surface agree with the new position.
Use the destination platform’s current placement preview to inspect interface overlays and cropping. Keep important information away from areas that the preview shows as covered. Save separate approved assets for different placements when necessary. One portrait file may not work equally well as a feed card, a full-screen story and a store banner.
If the new image fails, name the specific problem before regenerating: cramped headline, undersized product, unnecessary decoration or cropped label. Change that decision while keeping the product and message fixed. This produces an assessable revision instead of another unrelated vertical image.

Frequently asked questions
Can I just stretch the square image vertically?
No. Stretching changes product and letter proportions. Reposition elements or create a new composition for the target ratio.
Does more background space mean I need more props?
No. Quiet space can support readable copy and product recognition without introducing additional objects.
Will a 9:16 image pass every platform review?
No. Inspect current destination requirements, placement overlays and the final exported file before publication.
