Product videos / DECISION GUIDE
How to reuse one product clip in vertical and horizontal layouts
Reframe an approved clip when the important product evidence remains visible in every target crop. Cropping rearranges the visible window; it does not reveal a new side of the product. Keep the original clip intact, create separate layout derivatives and review each one throughout its motion before publishing.
Define the evidence that must survive every crop
List the product features that make the shot useful: both handles, the complete lid, the front label or the relationship between a bag and its included strap. A visually attractive centered crop can still remove the very evidence the campaign needs. Decide which attributes are essential before comparing vertical and horizontal composition options.
Consider an illustrative desk-lamp clip with a wide base and an articulated arm. A narrow crop that preserves the shade but removes the base no longer shows the full object. If the buyer question concerns the lamp footprint, that derivative fails even though the headline fits. The acceptance rule comes from the intended information, not from filling the canvas.
Check the largest excursion, not only the opening
Inspect where the product reaches its widest or highest position during the camera move. Place a temporary crop overlay on the full passage and watch normal playback. A slight lateral slide may place a control beyond the vertical edge halfway through the shot. A crop approved from the first frame alone cannot establish that the whole derivative works.
Also inspect shadows, cables and contact surfaces when they explain the object. Removing a cable that appears to power the lamp may alter the impression of how it functions. Do not use reframing to hide an inconvenient visible fact. Keep a note of the necessary context so the editor does not mistake every surrounding detail for expendable background.
Choose an honest layout route
| Source condition | Reasonable route | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Product remains inside both crops | Create separate cropped derivatives | Check motion and title placement again |
| Essential width exceeds a vertical crop | Fit the source inside a designed canvas | Accept surrounding layout space |
| Necessary detail leaves the frame | Prepare another composition or source | A new production decision is needed |
| A crop requires invented unseen edges | Do not call it ordinary reframing | New synthesized content needs separate review |
Adobe Auto Reframe creates a duplicate sequence for a selected ratio. Automated reframing helps reposition the view, but the product acceptance decision remains yours. Adobe’s sequence reframing guide. It is not evidence that a narrow format can contain every wide product.
Separate a canvas change from a new perspective
A vertical version of a horizontal lamp clip should show the same photographed or generated surfaces unless you intentionally produce another shot. Stretching the lamp to fit changes its apparent proportions. Filling missing edges with synthesized content adds a separate factual risk. Neither operation should be described simply as exporting the original footage in a new ratio.
When the full source is fitted inside a taller canvas, use surrounding space for useful editable messaging rather than pretending it was part of the original scene. Check that borders, background treatments and title cards are deliberate. For a platform placement, compare the result with its current interface safe zone; TikTok’s official placement guidance makes that check destination-specific.
Track and approve derivatives separately
Keep one clean approved source and identify the vertical and horizontal exports as distinct deliverables. Record the crop, usable interval and message associated with each. Approval of the source means the underlying footage passed its intended review; it does not automatically approve every resize, crop, subtitle or placement made from it later.
In the lamp scenario, a horizontal product-page version might show the entire arm while a vertical social version uses a fitted canvas and a short callout. Both can be honest uses of the same material. If a target layout cannot preserve the necessary evidence, choose another composition instead of forcing the crop or requesting an unsupported view from the video model.

Frequently asked questions
Can changing the ratio reveal another product angle?
No. Reframing changes which existing pixels are shown. A new perspective needs another appropriate source or production step.
Should I stretch a wide product into a vertical frame?
No. Stretching changes apparent proportions. Crop only when essential details survive, or fit the source inside a designed canvas.
Does an approved source mean all resized exports are approved?
No. Review each derivative for crop, motion, text, interface overlap and retained product context.
