DECISION GUIDE / A+ product pages
How do I explain product construction without publishing confidential engineering detail?
Explain only the construction details customers need, using approved functional descriptions rather than confidential engineering drawings. Before creating a public illustration, classify each source detail as publishable, suitable for abstraction, or restricted. Prepare a separate sanitized reference, obtain approval from the responsible owner, and verify that the final image communicates the intended function without revealing protected information or inventing components.
Decide what the customer needs to understand
An engineering drawing may contain dimensions, manufacturing tolerances, internal geometry, supplier identifiers, and other details unnecessary for a product page. The editorial decision is not whether those details are accurate, but whether they should appear publicly. Unlike an exploded-view accuracy review, this workflow establishes a disclosure boundary before visual production.
Consider a fictional pump with a replaceable filter. Customers need to understand that the filter can be replaced and where the approved access point is located. They do not need the complete internal manufacturing drawing.
Start with a narrow communication objective: identify the replaceable filter and its relationship to the pump housing. Keep any replacement procedure separate unless approved product instructions support it.
Build a public-disclosure map
Review the source drawing with the responsible product or engineering owner. Classify information as approved for publication, approved only as an abstraction, or restricted. These statuses describe disclosure decisions, not whether the underlying engineering information is correct.
An approved abstraction may show a functional block without reproducing its exact geometry. Restricted dimensions, manufacturing details, and identifiers should remain outside the public illustration. If a necessary relationship cannot be explained accurately without restricted information, pause and request an alternative approved explanation.
| Information | Disclosure class | Public treatment | Approval question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replaceable filter | Publishable | Label verified function | Is this customer-facing? |
| Internal flow relationship | Abstract only | Approved functional blocks | Does abstraction remain accurate? |
| Manufacturing dimensions | Restricted | Omit completely | Any visible measurements? |
| Internal drawing identifier | Restricted | Exclude from public asset | Any residual identifiers? |
Prepare a safe reference before visual creation
Never upload the confidential original merely to ask an image tool to hide sensitive sections. Drawing a rectangle over restricted content is not equivalent to removing it. A public reference must be prepared separately and checked for hidden information.
Adobe distinguishes content redaction from removal of hidden PDF data. Keep the original privately under the team's established access controls. A designated owner should prepare and inspect a sanitized copy before it enters any external creative workflow.
For the fictional pump, a safe brief can describe the approved housing outline, replaceable filter, and simplified functional relationship. It must not include invented internal components, precise dimensions, or an unsupported replacement sequence.
Itemlume can help produce raster concepts from approved inputs. It does not sanitize confidential drawings or certify disclosure safety. Text planning is free after sign-in; image and video generation follow current quoted prices.
- Preserve the original engineering file in the authorized private location.
- Create a separate public-reference copy using approved information.
- Remove restricted visible content and inspect for hidden data.
- Obtain the responsible owner's approval before uploading the copy.
- Generate or assemble the illustration using only approved references.
Review both disclosure and factual accuracy
A sanitized source does not guarantee a safe final image. Generated visuals may introduce plausible internal details that were never approved. Review the completed illustration against the disclosure map and the verified product facts.
Check labels, arrows, component relationships, background annotations, and any accompanying copy. Ask two separate questions: does the image expose restricted information, and does it imply an unsupported construction or customer action?
Maintain a manual release record containing the approved reference identifier, disclosure decisions, final asset version, reviewer, and publication destination. If either disclosure or accuracy review fails, revise the illustration or use a simpler external product view. Do not publish while either issue remains unresolved.
Record the decision in a manual worksheet
Manual Product Structure Disclosure and Release Register
The download contains fictional practice rows. Actual evidence and release decisions are blank for you to fill in. This manual record does not inspect products, update a store or certify compliance. Keep private material out of public copies.

Frequently asked questions
Can I upload a confidential drawing after covering sensitive dimensions with colored boxes?
No. A visual cover may leave underlying content or hidden data accessible. Prepare and inspect a separately sanitized copy before any external upload.
Can an AI illustration show simplified internal components?
Only when the responsible owner approves the abstraction and its relationships are supported. Do not invent components or imply an unverified assembly or repair procedure.
