DECISION GUIDE / Virtual try-on
How do I align a POD mockup with the actual garment print position?
A chest design can appear centered in a POD mockup while sitting lower than the intended production placement. Judge its position using the provider's product-specific reference axes, template revision, print-area boundaries, and physical sample—not visual balance in a rendered shirt. Confirm the exact garment and size before approving artwork coordinates, and keep unverified placements out of production claims.
Distinguish photographic centering from print placement
A mockup can be centered within its image frame without matching the garment's approved printing position. Model posture, camera crop, and shirt folds change visual balance, but the production placement must use the actual supplier's reference system.
Fictional exercise: a chest graphic looks centered in a shirt photograph. The seller suspects it sits lower than the approved printing position. No physical sample measurement or placement comparison has been performed.
This is not an embroidery texture review. The decision concerns how artwork coordinates and real garment landmarks correspond to the provider's production setup.
Identify the correct print-area reference
Record the exact garment style, selected size, print method, current template revision, print-area limits, and the supplier's placement reference axes. Different products or sizes may use different available print areas.
A design inside the provider's safe zone is not automatically clear of every physical seam or other garment obstacle. Ask the fulfillment provider to confirm the applicable production conditions.
| Position reference | Fictional evidence | Required check | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mockup image center | Graphic looks centered | Not a production coordinate | Do not approve alone |
| Provider template | Revision not supplied | Confirm product and size | Hold |
| Print-area bounds | Actual limits unknown | Obtain product-specific area | Hold |
| Physical sample | No placement measurement | Compare with approved reference | Sample required |
Build a production-position handoff
Use the provider-approved artwork template outside Itemlume. Mark the placement reference, print-area boundaries, and intended position. Keep the artwork revision and garment SKU attached to those coordinates.
For the fictional shirt, compare the design's vertical position against the provider's specified reference rather than moving it upward until it merely looks attractive in the mockup.
Itemlume can assist with raster product and apparel concepts, but it does not configure POD production coordinates. Text planning is free after sign-in; image and video generation follow current quoted prices.
- Confirm the exact garment product, size, and print method.
- Obtain the provider's current product-specific template.
- Record the print-area boundaries and placement reference axes.
- Position the artwork using the supplier's approved method.
- Request a physical sample and document actual placement.
- Resolve differences with the production provider before release.
Approve the mockup and physical placement separately
Inspect the sample using real garment landmarks and the supplier's documented placement basis. Record artwork location, garment size, template revision, and the responsible production reviewer.
Do not infer a universal chest distance or transfer another supplier's named placement dimensions to this garment. A pleasing sample photograph alone is not proof that every size follows the same placement behavior.
Keep the approved digital preview and measured physical sample as separate evidence. If the supplier changes the template, product, or printing setup, recheck the placement before accepting the next production order.

Frequently asked questions
Can I move a chest print until it looks centered in the AI mockup?
Not as the production basis. Use the provider's actual garment reference and approved print template.
Does being inside the safe print area guarantee correct physical placement?
No. Check placement landmarks, garment obstacles, and the actual sample separately.
