Product images / DECISION CHECK
Why does AI background editing keep the fuzzy edge from my phone’s Portrait photo?
Check whether the phone already blurred or mis-segmented the product edge. An editing tool can inherit incomplete source evidence. Use an appropriate original or reviewed less-blurred version instead of treating guessed sharpening as proof of the real boundary.
Inspect the source without the new background
Open the phone photograph before any AI editing. Zoom into handles, transparent surfaces, thin straps and corners. If the edge is already soft or partly classified as background, the editor does not receive a clean record of that geometry. A simple blurred background can look pleasing while damaging the details required for an accurate product cutout.
Apple documents depth control for supported Portrait mode photographs. Check which controls are available for your specific photo and device. Not every downloaded image retains editable depth information, and this guide does not assume a universal “recover original edge” button.
Compare suitable source candidates
| Source | What to inspect | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait-mode export | Blurred thin parts or openings | Reject if identity evidence is lost |
| Supported depth-adjusted version | Edge becomes genuinely clearer? | Review before upload |
| Normal camera photograph | Sharp product boundary | Prefer when it supplies better evidence |
| AI-sharpened approximation | Invented or changed geometry | Do not treat as original proof |
Check the physical product alongside the photograph when possible. A recovered-looking curve can be plausible and still wrong. Retaking a simple sharp reference may be more reliable than escalating a chain of corrective generations.
Run one source-controlled edit
For a fictional glass dispenser, prepare a sharp normal photograph and keep the intended background brief unchanged. Compare the output against the clear source, concentrating on the pump tube and transparent boundary. Changing both the reference and scene direction would make it harder to see whether better source evidence resolved the defect.
Approve edges with evidence
Record which source was used and inspect product boundaries separately from scene realism. The generated result should not fill an actual opening or remove a thin component. Itemlume does not recover discarded phone depth data or certify every reconstructed edge. When the source is the first point of failure, improve that evidence before buying additional variations of the same faulty result.

Frequently asked questions
Can Portrait mode blur part of the product?
Inspect the actual source; depth segmentation may affect thin or ambiguous regions.
Can every exported JPEG undo Portrait blur?
No. Editable depth information and controls depend on the original and device.
Will sharper-looking AI detail prove the original edge?
No. Compare with real product evidence.
