Packaging studio / SCENARIO GUIDE
How to reserve barcode space in an AI packaging concept
Reserve a suitable area in the concept, then place a correctly generated and verified code in the production artwork. A barcode drawn by an image generator is decoration, even if it looks scannable. The symbol, placement and printed result require a separate technical review.
Distinguish a concept placeholder from a real code
A box mockup can show where a barcode or QR code is intended to live. It does not establish the encoded identifier or destination. Mark the area as a placeholder in your production notes and keep real identifiers out of an exploratory visual until the artwork workflow is ready to use them accurately.
For a retail barcode, work with the relevant identifier and symbol requirements for the product and market. For a QR destination, decide who controls the URL and how it will stay available. Do not use a generated screenshot as the master code artwork.
Reserve an area with a defined purpose
| Element | Concept-stage decision | Production-stage check |
|---|---|---|
| Retail barcode | A clear panel area | Correct identifier, symbol and printed quality |
| QR code | Useful destination and reachable panel | Correct URL and actual scan result |
| Clear margin | Space around the symbol | Applicable quiet-zone requirement |
| Surface | Avoid a fold or decorative overlap | Final substrate, print and placement review |
GS1’s retail 2D guidance explains that surrounding clear space and packaging interference matter. Exact dimensions depend on the symbol and application; do not copy one universal margin from an unrelated packaging example.
Plan the panel in Packaging studio
- Open Packaging studio with the intended structure and real product information.
- Include a quiet code area in the panel hierarchy, separate from dense artwork and fold lines.
- Generate the concept and review whether the area remains accessible and visually clear.
- Transfer the approved placement to the supplier’s production artwork workflow with the real code asset.
Keep generated code-like marks out of files used to print the actual box. If the image includes a convincing but false barcode, replace it with a documented placeholder for concept review and use the original verified code in the production layout.
Proof the printed result, not only the screen
Ask the supplier to check the final symbol against the applicable standard and print process. Test the QR destination and inspect a physical proof where appropriate. A code that scans once on a bright monitor does not establish reliable retail scan quality on curved, textured or glossy packaging.
Review placement on the assembled pack. A fold, seam, lid or sticker can cover a previously clear area. Keep the final approved code artwork and destination record with the packaging version. Itemlume does not issue product identifiers or certify barcode quality and scan compliance.

Frequently asked questions
Can I print the barcode shown in an AI mockup?
No. Use correctly generated, verified code artwork with the appropriate identifier and production review.
Is there one correct quiet-zone size for every code?
No. Requirements depend on the symbol and application. Follow the relevant standard and supplier checks.
Does one successful phone scan prove print compliance?
No. It is a useful functional check, but formal barcode quality and retail requirements need the appropriate verification.
