DECISION GUIDE / Packaging studio
How do I test label placement tolerance around critical artwork?
A label may be correctly designed yet become misleading when application shifts its position. Before approving production, identify which text or symbols must remain visible, obtain the applicator's actual placement variation, and inspect the extreme positions on real containers. Do not substitute a universal machine tolerance or assume that the centered artwork represents every applied label.
Identify the artwork vulnerable to placement shifts
Roll orientation explains how a label reaches the application equipment. Placement tolerance addresses a different question: what happens if the correctly oriented label lands slightly away from its intended position?
Fictional exercise: a bottle label is designed beside a closure edge. If the label shifts toward that edge, the closure may obscure the final word of an important instruction. The amount of shift and actual overlap have not been measured.
The review must identify critical words, codes, and symbols whose visibility matters in the finished application. A centered digital mockup cannot prove that all applied samples remain readable.
Obtain actual placement variation
Ask the label supplier and application operator for the intended position, actual applied-label observations, and applicable machine or process variation. Use their confirmed measurements rather than inventing a generic tolerance.
Mark the direction of the variation relative to the container's fixed landmarks. Record the approved die shape, label artwork revision, and sample identity.
| Placement state | Fictional concern | Evidence required | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominal position | Instruction visible in artwork | Approved applied sample | Reference only |
| Shift toward closure | Final word may be covered | Supplier-observed offset | Hold |
| Shift away from closure | Other artwork may approach edge | Opposite measured extreme | Inspect |
| Surface application | Bubbling may affect readability | Actual container and material sample | Separate diagnosis |
Overlay measured extremes on the approved artwork
In an external layout tool, place the approved die shape and artwork against a representation of the actual container. Overlay the supplier-confirmed extreme positions without changing the critical wording.
For the fictional bottle, inspect whether the final instruction word remains visible at the closure-side extreme. If not, request an artwork relocation or process review. Do not arbitrarily shrink the text or silently remove words.
Avery's application guidance notes that application, surface, and material can affect bubbling. That issue requires separate diagnosis; it does not establish placement tolerance. Itemlume packaging images are raster concepts, not production dielines.
- Identify critical text and fixed container landmarks.
- Obtain actual applied-label variation from the operator.
- Confirm the current die shape and artwork revision.
- Overlay the measured extreme positions externally.
- Inspect physical applied samples at those positions.
- Request supplier approval of any artwork or process change.
Approve the applied label, not just the flat file
The final decision should use labelled physical samples representing the agreed placement extremes. Inspect the complete instruction, its reading direction, nearby closure elements, and any additional application defects.
Do not prescribe one cleaning chemical, puncturing method, or curing interval for application bubbles. Follow the actual material supplier's instructions.
Keep the approved artwork version, die reference, observed offset, sample photographs, operator, and production decision together. If the container, closure, material, or applicator changes, reassess the affected placement range before releasing production.

Frequently asked questions
Can I approve the label because its centered mockup is readable?
No. Check the label at actual placement extremes on the intended container before confirming critical text remains visible.
What tolerance should I use if the supplier has not provided one?
Do not invent a universal value. Request process-specific measurements and an application review from the supplier.
