DECISION GUIDE / Product videos
How do I present a real customer review with synthetic narration without impersonating the reviewer?
Permission to quote a customer's written review does not automatically authorize cloning their voice or making synthetic narration sound like their personal recording. Separate the customer's words from the narrator's identity, check the actual permission scope, and identify the audio as narration. Preserve the review's approved meaning while preventing viewers from mistaking the generated voice for the customer's own.
Separate the review from the speaker
A written review establishes text attributed to a customer, subject to verification and permitted use. It does not provide the customer's voice, speaking style, or permission for a simulated personal performance.
Fictional exercise: a seller has permission to display a written customer review. The video team wants a generic synthetic narrator to read it. The narration must not be presented as a recording made by that customer.
This decision differs from shortening a quotation: the central issue is the identity listeners believe they are hearing.
Check the actual rights and presentation scope
Ask the responsible rights holder or authorized reviewer to inspect the actual permission record. Distinguish text quotation, audio adaptation, customer identification, and synthetic voice imitation.
A general model-release example does not establish permission for every AI derivative. Do not invent consent terms or treat permission to quote text as voice-cloning authorization.
| Audio treatment | Fictional evidence | Identity risk | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Written review on screen | Text-use permission assumed | No simulated voice | Check approved scope |
| Generic synthetic narration | Audio permission unconfirmed | May imply customer speech | Hold for review |
| Cloned customer voice | No voice authorization | Direct impersonation risk | Reject |
| Customer's actual recording | No recording supplied | False source implication | Do not imply |
Make narration identity explicit
When the applicable permissions and factual presentation have been approved, use an ordinary narrator identity rather than imitating the reviewer's voice. An appropriate on-screen explanation might be 'Written customer review, read by a synthetic narrator.' This describes production method, not customer participation in recording.
Keep the approved review meaning intact. Do not add fictional pauses, emotions, or personal anecdotes that transform the narration into a new customer statement.

Keep audio approval tied to the final video
Listen to the exported video without looking at its production notes. Ask whether a viewer might reasonably think the customer recorded the narration. Review voice style, attribution, captions, and surrounding testimonial imagery together.
US FTC endorsement guidance distinguishes genuine experiences from unsupported presentations. It does not automatically authorize synthetic identity use.
Keep the text permission, audio review, narrator description, approved script, and final file identifier together. If the permissions or presentation remain uncertain, use the written review only within its confirmed scope or omit it.

Frequently asked questions
Does permission to publish a written review allow me to clone the customer's voice?
No automatic permission follows. The actual authorization for voice and synthetic alteration must be reviewed separately.
Is a generic synthetic narrator always acceptable?
Not automatically. Check the permitted use and ensure the finished presentation does not suggest the customer personally recorded the audio.
