How to distinguish external dimensions from usable space in A+ content
A dimension is useful only when the buyer knows what was measured. Outside width, opening clearance and usable interior width can answer different questions about the same product. Define the endpoints before building an A+ module. Keep an attractive generated interior separate from the real measurements used to explain fit or capacity.
Choose the span behind the buyer's question
Ask what the buyer is trying to place, pass through or store. A desktop organizer's outside width answers whether it occupies a shelf footprint. Its opening width answers whether an object can enter. Its usable internal width answers whether that object can rest inside. One number should not quietly serve all three jobs, even when their values are close.
Write a measurement definition that names both endpoints, the product state and the relevant obstructions. A lid, handle, lining, hinge or tapered wall can change the usable region without changing the largest exterior span. Use a real measurement record or an authoritative specification. Itemlume does not measure the source photographs or calculate clearance from a generated cross section.
Pick the view that makes the endpoints inspectable
A measurement arrow should land on the surfaces named by the definition. If those surfaces are hidden, a convincing cutaway may invent an interior instead of explaining it. Choose a real supporting view, a separately approved diagram or a narrower measurement claim. This decision table keeps the image evidence aligned with the question; it does not prescribe a universal clearance allowance.
| Buyer question | Relevant definition | Evidence needed |
|---|---|---|
| Will it occupy this shelf? | Outside footprint in stated orientation | Measured exterior and actual protrusions |
| Can an object enter? | Clear opening at the limiting point | Actual opening and obstructing features |
| Can an object rest inside? | Usable span in the intended position | Measured interior with obstructions |
| How much does it hold? | Documented capacity by stated method | Separate capacity evidence, not an arrow alone |
Prepare A+ content with defined values
Open A+ content with real product references and choose an existing module appropriate to the explanation. In Product facts & requirements, provide the approved value, unit, span definition and visible product state together. Select an explanatory view that allows the reviewer to locate the endpoints. Avoid asking the generator to infer interior dimensions from an exterior photograph.
Review each arrow, number and label as an independent element. A correct value attached to an outside arrow can misstate an internal dimension. If exact labels or lines are unreliable, prepare approved measurement artwork through an external process rather than treating a clearer looking regeneration as validation. Keep the original measurement record beside that artwork for the final review.
Test the interpretation with a hypothetical organizer
Imagine an organizer with an outside width of 240 mm and a documented usable width of 218 mm between internal walls. A candidate places 240 mm across the inner compartment. The arithmetic is not the issue: the module has assigned an exterior number to a different physical span. Reject that arrow and label pairing before reviewing the overall visual style.
The merchant can show outside footprint in one view and usable width in another, with distinct wording. That takes more space than a single broad dimensions image but answers two real questions. If the opening is narrower than the interior, add its actual limiting measurement when relevant. Do not calculate it by subtracting an assumed wall thickness or using a generic allowance from another product.
Handoff definitions with the approved module
NIST distinguishes a quantity's numerical value from its unit.
The handoff should preserve the measurement endpoints, state, source and date, not only a list of numbers. Flag any uncertainty about taper, flexible lining or protruding hardware for the product owner. The next editor needs to know why an outside label cannot move inside during a redesign. A new product revision may require new measurements even if the silhouette appears unchanged.
Use dimension presentation for verified value layout and accessory inclusion review when handles or inserts affect the usable space. Approve the actual delivered diagram in context. A plausible generated interior cannot establish usable fit, numerical capacity or compatibility with an object the merchant has not checked.

Frequently asked questions
Can I infer interior width from outside width?
Only an authoritative measured or specified relationship supports that inference; do not use a generated image or an assumed wall allowance.
Is an opening dimension the same as usable space?
Not necessarily. Define the limiting opening and interior span independently when they answer different questions.
Does an accurate number make the diagram accurate?
No. The arrow endpoints, unit, label and depicted product state must also match the measurement.
