JPEG, PNG or WebP: which product-image file should you deliver?
Choose the format after deciding where the image goes. Preserve an editing master, then make the smallest acceptable delivery copy that the destination supports. A renamed extension does not convert a file, and a smaller file is useful only if the buyer can still inspect the product.
Describe the content before choosing the format
A full photographic scene, a transparent product cutout and a small diagram have different needs. For an illustrative headphone listing, the room scene may tolerate photographic compression while a transparent logo asset needs an alpha channel. Do not export every asset with one preset just because that preset worked for the first image.
Ask the receiving editor or commerce platform what it accepts. Shopify documents its media handling, but an email tool, marketplace or supplier may have different requirements. Itemlume downloads are creative files; the destination still needs its own delivery review.
Make a format decision sheet
| Need | Candidate | Inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Photographic scene | JPEG or supported WebP | Texture and gradients |
| Transparent edge | PNG or alpha-capable WebP | Edge on intended background |
| Fine text diagram | Lossless-capable export | Characters at display size |
| Unknown destination | Its documented accepted type | Upload and actual rendering |
MDN explains the format capabilities. These candidates are starting points, not universal quality rankings. The encoding settings and displayed size can matter more than the extension alone.
Compare the exports fairly
Export two candidates from the same master at the same dimensions. Compare them at the size buyers will see and at the useful zoom level. Check seams, fabric texture, fine label strokes and smooth shadows. Record the file size alongside the defects; a tiny saving does not justify losing an identifying product feature.
Verify the received file
Upload the selected export to a draft listing and inspect the platform-produced rendition. Confirm that transparency was not flattened against an unwanted color and that the file actually opens as its declared type. Keep the chosen export settings with the asset record. Use the download comparison guide before encoding and the metadata guide before public release.
A two-destination export example
Imagine delivering a headphone scene to a storefront and a transparent brand mark to an email designer. Keep two delivery records rather than one universal file. The scene review checks cushion texture and the shadow at its displayed size. The mark review checks the alpha edge against the email background. Ask the email designer for an accepted file type before conversion. Retain both exports with their intended placements. If the storefront re-encodes the scene, approve its actual rendition too; the local export approval alone does not cover that additional stage.

Frequently asked questions
Can I turn PNG into JPEG by renaming it?
No. Use a real format conversion.
Is WebP always the right answer?
Check destination support and the actual encoded detail.
Does this add an Itemlume conversion tool?
No. Conversion and storefront delivery use external editing or publishing tools.
