Product images / DECISION GUIDE
Which product image belongs in a feed, a gallery or an advertisement?
Approve product images for specific roles rather than labeling every good-looking file as ready for all channels. A clean identification image, an explanatory gallery image and a promotional advertisement communicate different things. Make a manual destination map that records what each image may be used for, then inspect the actual placement before publishing.
Define the image role before choosing the file
Imagine a desk lamp with three approved assets: a plain product view, a room scene, and a launch image with a promotional headline. All three may accurately show the same lamp. That does not make them interchangeable. The first helps identify the item, the second illustrates context, and the third communicates a campaign message. Choosing by aesthetic preference alone can place an offer graphic into a product feed or an unhelpfully plain image into a contextual story.
Write the role beside the filename in your own worksheet. Include the exact SKU and physical edition so a promotional image from last year is not accidentally approved for a revised lamp. Keep creative approval separate from destination approval; the latter depends on where and how the image will appear.
Build a small asset-to-placement matrix
| Asset | Possible role | Decision still required |
|---|---|---|
| Clean lamp photograph | Product identification | Current channel and category requirements |
| Lamp in a study | Contextual gallery or campaign | Included items and realistic scale |
| Launch headline artwork | Promotional placement | Current offer and placement rules |
| Port or control close-up | Supporting explanation | Enough context to identify the detail |
Use a separate row for each actual placement, not merely each platform. A store collection card, product gallery and campaign banner can use different crops on the same website. Record the destination owner, upload location and approval date. This is a merchant planning document, not an Itemlume synchronization feature.
Treat a feed image as data as well as artwork
A feed uses an image together with a product identifier, variant and landing page. A correct lamp photo attached to the wrong finish is still an incorrect listing. Check that the selected file shows the sold item and agrees with the page reached by that listing. Do not use a private workspace result address as a public feed delivery plan.
The Google image-link specification distinguishes the main image attribute from supporting image attributes. Consult that live documentation for the destination’s current rules. This guide does not make a universal eligibility judgment from a filename, a white background or an Itemlume marketplace selector.
Create candidates with a stated destination role
In Product images, upload the exact product references and describe the intended role in the requirements. A white-background candidate should prioritize unobstructed identification. A scene candidate can explain context without implying that every background object is included. Keep promotional wording out of a clean identification request when it has no useful role there.
Download and review the candidate before assigning it to your worksheet. If one image supports two roles, approve each separately. Do not regenerate an already accurate product merely to create a different file name; a controlled external crop may be enough when the new framing keeps the important evidence intact.
Release by placement and revisit changed destinations
For the hypothetical lamp, manually choose the identification image for the feed, inspect the room scene in the gallery, and verify the promotional creative against its current landing page. Open each real placement after upload. Check the selected variant, visible crop, attached text and whether the file loads outside your own account.
If a theme or channel changes its presentation, revisit the affected rows rather than declaring the whole campaign invalid. Preserve the source file and the prior approval note so you can explain what changed. Itemlume does not automatically distribute these assets, inspect platform eligibility or guarantee approval; your destination review completes the handoff.

Frequently asked questions
Can one product image be used everywhere?
Sometimes an accurate source can support several placements, but each placement still needs its own crop, role and current-rule review.
Does selecting Amazon or Shopify approve my image for that platform?
No. The workbench setting guides the creative request; it is not a destination compliance check or an automatic upload.
Where should the image-use map live?
Keep it in your own catalog worksheet or asset-management process. Itemlume does not create a channel-to-SKU publishing map for you.
