Why does my clipped color correction affect the shadow instead of the product?

Inspect the clipping relationship, not just the adjustment’s name. A clipping mask uses its base layer’s transparency, so a correction attached to a shadow layer can miss the merchandise even if it is named Product correction.

01 / WHY DOES MY CLIPPED COLOR CORRECTION AFFECT THE SHADOW INSTEAD OF THE PRODUCT?

Work through the cause

  1. Duplicate the group and identify the actual product pixel layer, shadow and backdrop. Select layers one at a time to see their extent.
  2. Place the correction in the intended clipping relationship. Toggle it and watch a recognizable product detail and the separate shadow.
  3. Inspect partially transparent edges against the final backdrop. Recheck after any layer reordering.
02 / WHY DOES MY CLIPPED COLOR CORRECTION AFFECT THE SHADOW INSTEAD OF THE PRODUCT?

A concrete case (illustrative)

Illustrative case: a bottle correction sits directly above a contact-shadow layer. The shadow changes while the bottle remains unchanged. Attach the correction to the product base, then make an independent decision about shadow tone.

03 / WHY DOES MY CLIPPED COLOR CORRECTION AFFECT THE SHADOW INSTEAD OF THE PRODUCT?

Acceptance and next action

Pass when the correction reaches the intended product region without recoloring the backdrop. A correctly clipped adjustment can still produce an inaccurate product color; compare with the approved actual reference before delivery.
