How do I brighten the background without changing the product color in Photoshop?

Limit the adjustment to the intended background layers or use a carefully reviewed mask. A global brightening layer changes the composite, including the product, so a brighter background alone does not prove the adjustment is isolated.

Work through the cause

  1. Separate the product, background and contact shadow in the working file where possible. Identify which surfaces the correction should affect.
  2. Place the adjustment within the appropriate layer relationship or constrain it with a mask. Toggle it while watching both the background and a stable product patch.
  3. Inspect edge reflections and the contact area. Correct the boundary locally if needed instead of compensating with an opposite global adjustment.

A concrete case (illustrative)

Illustrative case: raising exposure makes a gray backdrop lighter but also washes out a dark fabric bag. A background-limited adjustment preserves the approved bag image while allowing a separate decision about how its shadow should blend.

Acceptance and next action

Pass when the change is confined to the intended region and the product agrees with the approved reference. Isolation cannot turn an inaccurate source into a color reference. Itemlume does not certify color accuracy through this manual Photoshop procedure.
