Logo studio / DECISION CHECK

Should I keep my logo text editable or convert it to outlines?

Keep an editable master for future authorized changes and a separately reviewed delivery export for fixed appearance. Converting type to outlines can preserve its shape across recipients, but it removes ordinary text editability and does not grant font rights.

01 / SHOULD I KEEP MY LOGO TEXT EDITABLE OR CONVERT IT TO OUTLINES?

Name the two jobs separately

A master supports later spelling, language or layout edits. A production export needs to reproduce the approved letter shapes on the receiving system. If you convert the only master to outlines, a small brand-name correction becomes a geometry task. If you deliver only live text without confirming font availability and permitted use, the receiver may see a substituted design.

Adobe’s SVG export guidance describes converting type to vector paths to preserve visual appearance. This is a format option, not a substitute for reviewing font licensing, letter spacing and file compatibility. Do not send a font file unless the relevant rights allow it.

Define the handoff pair

FileRetainsReview
Editable masterLive type and intentional layoutFont identity, permission and backup
Outlined fixed exportApproved letter geometryShape, spacing and expected application
PNG previewReference appearanceMatches the approved export
Change noteVersion and allowed alterationsNo ambiguous “final-final” copies

An outlined wordmark can still differ from the original if a conversion, export or later path edit changed it. Compare both versions at the same size and view the receiving application’s output.

03 / SHOULD I KEEP MY LOGO TEXT EDITABLE OR CONVERT IT TO OUTLINES?

Use a deliberate correction exercise

For a fictional “Mira Works” brand, first approve the live-type spelling and spacing. Save the master, create a copy for outlining, then compare the two. Test the outlined copy in the web or print workflow that actually receives it. If a supplier requests a different format, retain the master and export another reviewed version rather than repeatedly converting converted files.

04 / SHOULD I KEEP MY LOGO TEXT EDITABLE OR CONVERT IT TO OUTLINES?

Avoid false accessibility assumptions

Outlined letters are visual geometry, not normal selectable text. On a website, provide an appropriate accessible brand name for a meaningful logo image instead of assuming the paths are readable as words by every system. Itemlume provides raster logo concepts; production typography and vector conversion take place in separate suitable software. Keep that external approval with the delivered files.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Should I outline the only master?

Keep an editable original and outline a separate reviewed delivery copy.

Does outlining clear font licensing?

No. Rights still require their own review.

Can outlined letters be edited like text?

No. They are geometry rather than ordinary live type.
