Product images / QUESTION GUIDE
How should handmade product photos show natural variation?
Use a representative scene to explain a handmade range, but use an actual photograph when the buyer is purchasing one specific piece. AI should not smooth every irregularity into a uniform factory product. Decide what varies naturally, what is selectable and what belongs to the exact inventory unit before requesting a scene.
Identify what the order refers to
A handmade ceramic cup may be sold as an individual numbered piece or as a made-to-order design with variable glaze. Those are different promises. Record whether the photograph must match the exact cup that will ship. Keep the inventory number with the source photograph when it does. A beautiful representative image cannot silently replace that evidence.
For a made-to-order range, describe the variation plainly in the listing. Do not ask the generator to create every possible glaze outcome and present those outcomes as actual stock. Build the first scene around a photographed sample that your maker considers representative.
Separate variation from error
| Visible difference | Meaning | Image decision |
|---|---|---|
| Glaze pooling | Intentional process variation | Retain and explain |
| Different handle shape | Different construction | Use that item’s source |
| Cracked rim | Condition requiring a real assessment | Do not beautify away |
| Background stain | Scene distraction | Change the scene separately |
Ask the maker to distinguish acceptable variation from a defect. An editor should not make that decision from aesthetics alone. Write the answer beside the source before generating, so the review does not depend on remembering why a particular mark was left in place.
Generate the atmosphere around a real example
Open Product images with the representative photograph and describe the setting, such as a simple breakfast table. State that the glaze distribution and asymmetry belong to this example. Compare the candidate with that photograph rather than with an idealized drawing. Keep an actual-item image available for buyers who need to inspect the surface.
Etsy’s variation documentation explains how photos can be linked to selectable options. That is a destination workflow, not automatic inventory synchronization from Itemlume. Make those associations in the shop and check them using the actual option selector.
Approve the listing promise as well as the picture
An illustrative release note might say: atmosphere image uses sample C; current one-of-a-kind item uses inventory photograph C17; custom orders vary in glaze. This is a suggested record, not evidence from a real shop. Verify that titles, option names and captions express the same distinction.
If the generated cup becomes perfectly symmetrical or loses a identifying glaze feature, reject it for exact-item use. A representative composition may still need a clearer explanation. Read the variant proofing guide for selectable colors and the condition guide for marks that affect what ships.

Frequently asked questions
Can AI show the exact handmade item?
A generated image still needs comparison with the photographed item. Retain actual-item evidence when a buyer purchases that unit.
Should I remove every irregularity?
No. Confirm whether it is intentional variation, a defect or a background distraction.
Does Itemlume link images to Etsy stock?
No. Configure and verify the associations in your store.
